BHATE Geosciences has been contracted by Johnson Brothers to provide precast concrete testing and inspection services on a fabrication yard they have established just south of the Birmingham International Airport. The project will involve the construction of eight bridges between 15th Street and 31st Street along the current alignment of Interstate 20/59 through the Central Business District of Birmingham, Alabama. T
he project will replace the 6,600-foot bridge through the heart of the CBD with a new segmental bridge, along with the replacing of the bridges (ramps) just east of the Carraway Blvd. and Red Mountain Expressway interchange. To construct the bridges noted, approximately 2,300 segments will be fabricated. Close to 1,000 of the segments will be fabricated by October 2018. Other structural components to be fabricated include pile caps, columns and pier caps.
BHATE Geosciences will perform inspections of over 6,000 tons of reinforcing steel and will sample, test and inspect the placement of over 75,000 cubic yards of concrete. We previously performed subsurface utility engineering (SUE) using ground penetrating radar (GPR) at the project site to locate unknown underground utilities.
