GPR Determines Voids in Concrete Slabs

During the construction of the Tuscaloosa Federal Building, the contractor noted indications of possible settlement including possible movement of the concrete slab floor and damage to below grade piping.

Using ground penetrating radar (GPR), BHATE Geosciences engineers performed investigative scanning in order to determine if voids were present beneath the concrete slab.  After the structure scanning was complete, we produced an interactive 3D model of the voided areas and location of utilities within the slab and subsurface layers.   The limits of the voided areas were illustrated on the surface of the slab with chalk.

BHATE saved the contractor in time, costs and change orders due to the information we provided through our GPR scans.
